The Baggywrinkle Boating Blog

Why have I named this section The Baggywrinkle Blog?  At a simplistic level it is because I love the word and have wanted to incorporate it into a writing project for some time.

The origin of the term dates back to the tall ships of yore and a protective covering for shrouds (ropes or cables supporting the masts) made from pieces of frayed old rope.  A baggywrinkle is usually a bit scruffy in appearance and certainly bears no resemblance to the sleek PVC or vinyl chafe guards we often deploy today.  Like us, each baggywrinkle has a definite personality of its own.  Another more humourous definition I have heard of late for baggywrinkle is “the effect of sun and sea spray on a sailor’s body”.

With a few tweaks we can fit that definition to our purposes here, which is to provide a home for my sailing blogs and related writing.
