This article was published in the Summer 2015 issue of Harbor Happenings, the quarterly newsletter of the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program.  As stated in their masthead above, the byline of CHNEP is “working together to protect the natural environment from Venice to Bonita Springs to Winter Haven. The publication has a large email distribution as well as a print run of 30,000 copies.  It is also available online at chnep.org.

The article is drawn from a personal interest research project completed in the first half of 2015.  The project involved a study of the various conservation land holdings in the area surrounding Burnt Store Marina focusing on how they were assembled, who manages them and how the acquisitions were funded. The full research findings are contained in Chapter 9 – We’re Surrounded of my book Where Do We Live?
